Gerbil Development

Day One
Yay ! Went into the animal room at 6am to find that Badger had given birth to eight little pink babies sometime in the night. They are so tiny, and can't do anything except wriggle helplessly and make little pitiful squeaks in the hope of attracting Mum's attention. Their eyes are closed, and their ears aren't open yet either. I had a quick hold after giving my hands a good wash- they felt like wriggling warm rubber !

Day Two
They are already bigger than yesterday, and can squeak louder as well. Some of the babies are beginning to develop dark patches, the first sign of their fur colouring. Apparantly, their ears are beginning to open, but they are too small to see any difference. they can wriggle more which means they keep rolling out of the nest and getting lost in sawdust.
